During his scientific career Prof. Roberto Bresciani dedicated himself to the following topics:
study of the biochemical and molecular aspects that regulate the maturation and intracellular transport of lysosomal enzymes and their associated receptors;
study of the metabolism of sialoglycoconjugates, with a particular interest to gangliosides;
cloning and biochemical characterization of different forms of sialidases, enzymes that are involved in the removal of sialic acid residues from the oligosaccharide antennas of different sialoglycoconjugates;
study of the post-translational processing of the sialidase form known to be associated to cellular membranes;
study of the localization of the membrane associated sialidase in the different subcompartments of the plasma membrane;
study the role of the different sialidases in the regulation of cellular and molecular mechanisms in different tumors;
biochemical characterization of the sialic acid acetyl-esterase;
cloning of sialidases, sialic acid acetyl-esterase and other different proteins in zebrafish (Danio rerio) and biochemical and functional study of the role of these proteins during the development of zebrafish;
biochemical characterization of exosomal vesicles and analysis of these biological structures as carriers of different biological activities, including the membrane associated form of sialidase.
