Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

The students have to show, in light of the most recent economic theories and for the long run, sufficient knowledge and comprehension of the most relevant economic trends; the ability to evaluate and expound the aforementioned dynamics, using the proper vocabulary; the capability to collect and process data and information and to make the best use of the available methodological toolbox to improve their own knowledge of the main topics.

a) Knowledge and understanding (KN)
The aim of the course is to deepen the knowledge of the most recent economic theories and facts in lights of their historical trend on the long run. Students will develop the ability to evaluate and expound the aforementioned dynamics, using the proper vocabulary and applying the main concepts previously acquired to understand the process of economic development and change. Students will be able to identify the main steps of economic development from the European expansion (age of discoveries) to the last wave of globalization, the industrialization of modern economies, and the international integration of economies. The course is based on the text A Concise Economic History of the World (see details below), classroom’s notes, and the material provided by the teacher.
b) Applying knowledge and understanding (AKN)
Students will acquire the capability to collect and process data and information and to make the best use of the available methodological toolbox to improve their own knowledge of the main topics. Students will learn to critically confront with sources, to develop a research question, and to search for bibliographic resources to set the basis of an historical analysis.
c) Making judgements (MJ)
The students will have developed the ability to understand and critically interpret the main economic events in the light of the knowledge acquired during the course. They will be able to read and understand historical sources and to make critical assessment about economic facts.
d) Communication skills (CS)
The students will be able to communicate in oral and written form using the appropriate lexicon. Students are invited to reply to questions made by the teacher and other students in class, so to acquire the ability to convey evidence-based information clearly and concisely. Students will prove autonomous ability to collect and organize information to produce effective communication and analysis with traditional and digital tools.
e) Learning skills (LS)
The students will reach the ability to comprehend complex economic facts in their historical evolution, making informed judgement on the contextual and institutional frameworks that impact economic results. Students will have the chance to confront with the actual development of economic facts and will develop the skill to understand how and why economic theories adapts or not to real world situation, applying the rigorous methods of comparison and judgement of the historical context.

Prerequisiti

No specific prior knowledge or skills are required.

Metodi didattici

6 CFU correspond to 16 lectures for a total of 40 hours. Students are encouraged to take notes that serve as course materials. Students wishing to explore specific topics have the opportunity to present their research in class, fostering peer discussions on issues of interest.

Verifica Apprendimento

Final written test. Students need to score at least 18 points to pass the test. Maximum point is 31 (equivalent to “Cum Laude”) at instructor’s discretion.

Contenuti

Economic History covers topics in World Economic History from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. The focus of the course is on the causes of economic development and the economic forces shaping social institutions in the past.
