Research interests
From 1992 to 1995 he worked as visiting fellow at the Cell Biology and Metabolism Branch, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, USA, under the supervision of Dr Richard Klausner and he studied the mechanisms involved in intracellular protein trafficking regulation, focusing on the role of small GTP-binding proteins and coat proteins in vesicle formation.
In 1995 joined the group of Prof Alberto Albertini and Prof Cristina Alberini at the University of Brescia first as a post-doc with a fellowship from The Fondazione per le Biotecnologie (Turin, Italy) and then as an assistant professor and started to work on the biological functions of proteins involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease and to investigate genetic aspect of neurodegenerative disorders. He focused his research on the biological regulation and function of the Amyloid Precursor Protein metabolism. He also extensively applied the DHPLC technology for the search of mutation affective the individual risk to develop Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
More recently he got involved in the study of iron metabolism and particularly the role of the metal in the development of NBIA disorders. Present interest is the study of the pathological mechanism underpinning rare neurodegenerative disorders such as PKAN, CoPAN and MPAN, all included in the NBIA category, developing and analyzing both animal (zebrafish) and cellular models.
At the same time he work as a physician in the Clinical chemistry and Molecular Biology Laboratory, where he is involved in the molecular diagnosis of oncohaematology disorders.
RESEARCH RESPONSIBILITIES.
• 2017- now PI in the project “Zebrafish brain and Coenzyme A –ZEBRACA”, Health and Wealth Program of the University of Brescia
• 2011-2015 PI in the multi-centric project “The Role of Iron and Mitochondria in the Pathogenesis of Pantothenate Kinase Associated Neurodegeneration (PKAN): Development of New Neuronal Cellular Systems and Analysis of a Mouse Model”, funded by Telethon Foundation Italy
• 2002-2004 PI in the PRIN-COFIN2002 (MIUR - Italian Ministry of School and University) project "Sviluppo e validazione di marker biochimico molecolari per la diagnosi differenziale delle demenze” regarding the study of genetic aspects of Alzheimer's disease.
• 2000-2002 PI in a multi-centric project funded by Ministero della Salute (Italian Ministry of Health) "Analisi della suscettibilità genetica allo sviluppo della Malattia di Alzheimer e approfondimento di possibili percorsi patogenetici tramite approcci innovativi, quali HPLC denaturante, DNA microarray ed interferenza da RNA” with the aim of creating a repository of biological samples derived from demented and non demented people, in order to develop and study biochemical and biological markers for the differential diagnosis of dementias..
He took part as a researcher to the following research activities funded by the Italian Ministry of School and University
• Prin 1997. Study of proteins regulating genetic expression: Iron Regulatory Proteins (IRPs).
• Prin 1998. Structural and functional analysis of proteins altered in hereditary disorders of iron metabolism
• Prin 2001 Structural and functional analysis of mitocho
