Other experiences
2000-Visiting Ph.D. Student- Department of Cell Biology, Duke University, Durham NC, USA. Main research: oligomerization of the human dopamine transporter and identification of critical domains for the assembly and function of the transporter.
Research activity
The main topic of my current research is the investigation of the dopamine receptor signaling system and its role in the development of various pathologies including Parkinson’s disease, L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia, cognitive deficits in Noonan Syndrome, major depression and resistance to treatments, nicotine dependence. My scientific activity has been particularly focused on the mechanisms involved in the dopamine receptor heterodimerization and heterodimers involvement in both physiological activities and pathological conditions. Of relevance is the study of the D1 receptor/NMDA receptor heteromer associated with the development of cognitive deficits in Noonan Syndrome, the D1 receptor/D3 receptor heterodimer in the mechanisms underlying the dyskinetic movement induced by L-DOPA in Parkinson disease patients, the D3 receptor/alfa4beta2nAchR heteromer in the mechanisms underlying dopamine neurons protection and structural remodeling with implications in the field of neurodegeneration and nicotine addiction.
The human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) technology represents the main tool for investigating the dopaminergic system both in physiological and pathological conditions.
Previous scientific interests include the role of the Nerve Growth Factor in the control of human prolactinomas and small cell lung cancer proliferation and differentiation; the mechanisms regulating D2 dopaminergic receptor expression in a cellular model of human prolactinoma; the molecular mechanisms involved in the adrenocortical cancer pathogenesis. The results of these have been presented as poster and/or oral presentations at Italian or international scientific meetings (3rd International Conference on Neurovascular and Neurodegenerative Disorders (NVND-2021), Paris, France; 19th SINS National Congress, 2021 Brescia, Italy; 18th SINS National Congress,2019 Perugia, Italy; Biennial International LRRK2 Meeting, 2018, Padova, Italy; XIII Congresso Nazionale Società Italiana di Tabaccologia, 2017, Bologna, Italy)and have given rise to 52 accepted peer-reviewed publications.
