Syllabus
Obiettivi Formativi
The course provides the necessary methodological tools to:
1. implement the strategies, techniques and knowledge of the specificities of oral business communication in English at a C1 level (CEFR);
2. be capable of applying the skills above to comprehend and produce complex texts in the field of economics;
3. be able to communicate orally about general topics at a C1 level;
4. be capable of sustaining an oral debate concerning advanced economic matters at a C1 level;
5. be able to speak in public in professional contexts.
COMPREHENSION KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
At the end of the course, students will have the good lexical and linguistic-communicative bases (at a C1 level) that are necessary to practice English for Business Communication in context (C1 oral).
APPLICATION OF NOTIONS AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS
At the end of the course, students will be informed of and capable of interpreting oral and written texts (at a C1 level) related to the following topics: ‘‘The global markeplace, The multicultural workforce, Communicating in Business through cross-linguistic barriers, Public Speaking in Business Communication, Reading and Interpreting an Annual report, International English for International Business’. They will also be capable of applying such knowledge to produce oral texts concerning business communication at a C1 level and to argument orally in professional contexts. They will master the basics of public speaking skills in international business contexts.
INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT
At the end of the course, students will be able to identify the most appropriate methods to analyse texts in English at a C1 level about the following areas: ‘The global markeplace, the multicultural workforce, Communicating in Business through cross-linguistic barriers, Public Speaking in Business Communication, Reading and Interpreting an Annual report, International English for International Business’.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
At the end of the course, students will be very good at describing orally the concepts in English (at a C1 level) concerning the semantic areas that have been dealt with during the course by means of oral texts using very accurate and appropriate language.
Drawing closely on the world of communication skills training, the course will bring students to structure their talks to fine-tuning their delivery, from designing their visuals and mastering their body language and from telling teir own stories and anecdotes to handling the all-important question-and-answer session.
LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the course, students will be able to apply acquired linguistic notions and learning methodologies to contexts and contents going beyond those dealt with during the course and know how to independently analyse new topics on business and management. Moverover, they will be able to speak of many different and varied business topics in public in front of an international audience, by knowing also some specified techniques related to the correct usage of the voice, body language, efficacy and efficiency in oral communication.

Prerequisiti
Authentic written and oral level B2 English. No evidence nor self-certification of the B2 level is required but the assumption of responsibility by the participant is assumed.
Metodi didattici
Face-to-face lessons (40 hours) and seminars (invitation of experts).
The face-to-face lessons provide students with the mastery of linguistic-communicative and pragmatic-linguistic skills that are required to understand and produce texts in English at a C1 level. Moreover, they give the foundations to the following topics:
1. Public speaking preparation and delivery. The hardware of public speaking (Attitudes, nerves, and rehearsal. Elements of effective presentation).
2. Building oratorical power & Speech construction. The elements of persuasion. The pragmatics of persuasion. Effective argumentation. Methods of persuasion
3. Oral effectiveness in English. Pronunciation, intonation and rhythm of the English language.
4. Non-verbal communication in international contexts. Eye contact. Gestures. Body action and personal appearance.
5. Negotiation and Argumenting techniques.
The seminars (for the duration of one hour each, supplementary to the course, with the support of selected invited experts in specific areas of public speaking and business communication) will offer the student the opportunity of practicing oral comprehension and production skills, in small groups (revision of English phonetics, prosody, rhythm and focus on techniques for the comprehension, synthesis and re-elaboration of texts). The aim of the seminars is to develop and reinforce students’ ability to independently comprehend and produce oral texts starting from a given prompt/starting point.

Verifica Apprendimento
The final exam is only an ORAL exam, which has the intent of improving students’ notions and skills in analysis and judgement, as well as their presentation skills (C1 level). The student who completes the final examination successfully is entitled to be awarded a virtual certificate (OPEN BADGE: https://bestr.it/badge/show/2550), entitled ‘International Public Speaking’.
It consists of TWO PARTS:
1. The student will be interviewed IN PRESENCE by the member of the exam board (the professor(s) in charge of the course and other lecturers) on the contents of the book ‘Global English for International Business’ (book for oral exam in bibliography).
2. The candidate will RECORD a public speaking presentation (DURATION: NO MORE THAN 10 MINUTES) on an international business topic . The presentation will be video-recorded by the candidate and sent to the Commission (at the following address: corpuslinguistics2019@unibs.it) FIVE days before the date of the oral exam, in order to give the Commission time enough to watch the videos and assess them adequately.
The final evaluation is based on the efficiency of the implemented methods, the completion and accuracy of the answers, and the clarity of the presentation. The FINAL MARK, expressed in thirtieths (with honours if deemed appropriate), is based on the results of both parts of the exam (with a 50% score for each part).
As for the interview (PART 1 of the exam), it has the intent of testing students’ oral comprehension and related oral production and assessing their notions and skills in analysis and judgement, as well as their critical thinking skills, at a C1 level.
As for the public speaking session in particular (PART 2 of the exam), the parameters for assessment are:
1. Content: Extent of coverage; Difficulty level of coverage; Clarity of coverage; Interest.
2. Organisation Overall: Coherence, good coordination, easy to follow; Conciseness; Clearness; Appropriateness.
3. Introduction: Gained the audience’s interest and immediate attention; Stated purpose clearly; Identified the topic and defined the scope of the presentation.
4. Body: The main points were supported with details; Documented facts where necessary; Transitions were made between the main points to enable the listener to follow the development of the presentation; Sounded believable; Sounded persuasive; Informative: something was learnt
5. Conclusion: Signal the ending; Summarised main points; Closed smoothly; Questions & Discussion; Responded to questions well.

The presented activities and notions concern both the practice of professional speaking and the analysis of spoken texts that are typical of intercultural communication in the field of business. In particular, the course gives the student the foundations of:
1. Negotiation and argumentation in business communication;
2. Public speaking in international business contexts;
3. English for Professional Purposes: business English, the English of banking and finance, English for Economics.
