Abstract:
The paper offers some reflections on different historical experiences and
anthropological models through which attempts have been made to “heal the
wounds” of violence. It considers the Western perspective (with the institution of
amnesty, rooted in the experience of ancient Greece), Old Testament Jewish law (the
ryb), and ubuntu, as practiced in South Africa at the end of apartheid. It concludes
with some thoughts on “restorative justice” as referenced in the “Cartabia reform.”
