DataBases and Web Information Systems research group investigates several aspects about data management and development of conceptual models, methodologies and tools for the collection, organisation, analysis, search, sharing and visualisation of data in different application domains, also including management and search of information over the Web. Research directions on these topics include:
- design of databases and information systems;
- design of data-intensive Web applications and Web information systems;
- service composition and search in service-oriented and micro-services architectures;
- modelling, search and integration of data and services with the use of ontologies and other Semantic Web methods and tools;
- design and development of data-intensive applications for mobile devices.
Recently, members of the research group are addressing new important challenges due to the explosion of Big Data, to the emerging of new usage scenarios and to relevant changes in the computing infrastructures. In this research area, new models, methods and tools for Big Data (and Open) "governance" for the Data Science are being developed, as enabling technologies for Industry 4.0 and Smart Cities, contributing to the transition towards the management and modelling of Big&Open Data within the "Smart Society". Research directions on these topics include:
- Big&Open Data exploration and analysis;
- multi-dimensional analysis of data streams;
- modelling and management of data in Cyber-Physical Systems for manufacturing and agri-food supply chains;
- design and querying of (Semantic) Data Lakes;
- adoption of Blockchain technologies, also in presence of Big Data;
- studies about Big Data quality issues.
