Professor of Solid and Structural Mechanics ("Scienza delle Costruzioni"). Research interests: 1) Non-local ("strain-gradient") effects on the constitutive behaviour of polycrystalline metals undergoing plastic deformations. 2) Mechanical behaviour of syntactic foams: homogenisation techniques and micromechanical analysis of the failure modalities. 3) Modelling actuation and sensing in composite materials and structures with soft electroactive phases. 4) Homogenisation methods for composite materials. 5) Mechanical behaviour of epoxy resins in the glassy state. 6) Extended variational principles applied to the structural dynamics. 7) Analysis and design of sandwinch panels made up of composite materials and concrete-timber composite beams. 8) Computational mechanics with the finite element method.

EXTENDED VARIATIONAL PRINCIPLES APPLIED TO THE STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS. The objective of this investigation is the development of algorithms for the numerical integration of the equations governing structural dynamics problem. Such algorithms are obtained by discretisation of extended functionals.
MICROMECHANICS OF COMPOSITE MATERIALS. We develop micromechanical models for composite materials, with emphasis on syntactic foams and epoxy-based particulate and fibre composites.
MODELLING ACTUATION AND SENSING IN COMPOSITE MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES WITH SOFT SMART PHASE. The objective of this project is the development of predicitve models for sensing, actuation, energy harvesting of composite materials and structures with soft smart phases, such as ionic polymer metal composites and dielectric laminated composites.
MODELLING SMALL-SCALE METAL PLASTICITY. Among the goals of this investigation there is the understanding and the modelling of the size effects experimentally observed in metals at the microscale.
MODELLING THE FLEXURE OF SANDWICH PANELS AND COMPOSITE BEAMS. We aim at developing structural models to accurately predict the stress state in sandwich panels and composite beams.
