Graduate in Medicine at the University of Milan in 1981. Specialization in Psychiatry from the same University in 1985. In 1988 awarded the title of Doctor of Research in Psychiatric and Relational Sciences.
After being Coordinator of the Center for Psychiatric Treatment and Rehabilitation of the Psychiatric Unit Policlinico, University of Milan (1995-2000), has been Director of the Department of Mental Health at Melegnano Hospital, near Milan (2000-2004). Since December 2004, is Director of a Psychiatric Unit at the Department of Mental Health of the Hospital Spedali Civili of Brescia, and is Associate Professor of Psychiatry (MED 25) at the University of Brescia since 2005. Before the lattest academic appointment he was Consulting Professor in the School of Psychiatric Specialization of the University of Milan since 1988, in the School of Psychiatric Specialization of the University of Brescia since 1998, and in the course for Psychiatric Rehabilitation Technicians of the University of Milan since 1997.
President of the Italian Society for Neuroimaging in Psychiatry; Past-President of the Lombardy section of the Italian Psychiatric Association; Secretary of the Section of Neuroimaging of the World Psychatric Association and of the International Society for Neuroimaging in Psychiatry; member of the Scientific Advisory Boards of the Italian Society of Biological Psychiatry, of the Italian Society of Psychosocial Rehabilitation and of the Schizophrenia International Research Society.
He is invoved in the study on neuromorphological and functional correlates of psychoses, especially using neuroimaging techniques. He took part as a collaborator in an international research network on the genetics of schizophrenia. He has also adapted and applied structured cognitive rehabilitative interventions in patients with schizophrenia.
Author or co-author of more than 300 scientific papers in national and international journals. Has been member of the editorial board of the journals Schizophrenia Research, Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging, New Trends in Experimental and Clinical Psychiatry, Quaderni Italiani di Psichiatria, Psichiatria e Psicoterapia.
