Chapter
Publication Date:
2024
Abstract:
The contribution describes the military infrastructure in the Alto Garda region during the First World War, highlighting the transformation of the conflict into a war of position and the consequent need to build trenches and artillery positions. It emphasizes the Austrian defensive strategy, which influenced the construction of forts in the alpine valleys, and the change in Italian tactics that led to the so-called White War and the subsequent establishment of a network of logistic infrastructures. Various military architectures such as barracks, trenches, firing positions, and hospitals are described, built with local materials and dry techniques. The construction of military roads using the same traditional techniques is also explored. Finally, the Mediterranean landscape of Lake Garda is discussed, highlighting the cultural identity and the precious heritage of these military infrastructures, between Mediterranean and Central European spirit.
