Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

A student at the B1 level in Italian will be familiar with all the issues faced at level A2, and in addition he/she will be able to:
• discuss personal and professional projects for the future;
• arrange a job interview and undergo for an interview in his/her area of expertise;
• talk about habits and favourite programmes;
• describe education and plans for future training;
• talk about favourite music and music trends;
• talk about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and give and get advice about healthy habits;
• talk about relationships and dating, including meeting people through social media;
• go to a restaurant, order food, engage in polite conversation;
• participate in negotiations in the area of expertise;
• discuss workplace safety issues, report an injury and explain rules and regulations;
• discuss polite behaviour and respond appropriately to impolite behaviour.

This training activity will provide the fundamental methodological tools to
1. know the strategies and techniques of communication in English (level B1 CEFR);
2. apply them in the comprehension and production of elementary texts of a specialized genre;
3. communicate on topics of a general kind in English at B1 level;
4. argue orally at B1 level on basic topics in specialist and/or professional fields.


COMPREHENSION KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
At the end of the course, students will acquire the lexical and linguistic-communicative bases (at a B1 level) that are necessary to comprehend oral and written general texts.

APPLICATION OF NOTIONS AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS
At the end of the course, students will be informed of and capable of interpreting oral and written general texts (at a B1 level). They will also be capable of applying such knowledge to produce oral and written texts at a B1 level.

INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT
At the end of the course, students will be able to identify the most appropriate methods to analyse texts in English at a B1 level about general topics.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
At the end of the course, students will be able to describe concepts in English both in written and in oral format (at a B1 level) concerning the semantic areas that are given for granted at a B1 level, as from the Common European Framework.

LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the course, students will be able to apply acquired linguistic notions and learning methodologies to general and academic contexts and contents going beyond those dealt with during the course and know how to independently analyse new topics.

Prerequisiti

A minimum A2 level as an entry requirement is required. No entry certificate is required.

Metodi didattici

Face-to-face lessons are planned in order to to provide students with the necessary tools to analyse and discuss oral and written texts at a B1 level. Practice classes are aimed to reinforce: 1) written comprehension and production skills (grammar and focus on specific lexis), 2) oral and written comprehension (with supplementary practice on techniques for the comprehension, synthesis and elaboration of texts).

Verifica Apprendimento

The final exam consists in a written and an oral exam without the use of dictionaries or any other material. To access the oral exam, it is mandatory to have passed the written test.
1. WRITTEN EXAM: The written exam aims at assessing students’ listening comprehension and written comprehension/production at a B1 level. Further details will be given by the teacher during the course
2. ORAL EXAM: The oral exam requires B1 skills as for: a) describing oneself and answer questions about oneself; b) describing a picture or a photograph and/or have a conversation starting from a visual prompt; c) taking part into a conversation B1 level

The bibliography may be subject to change depending on the learner's actual level of initial competence. The bibliography used in the classroom will then be provided after the placement test, starting in the second week of the course.

Contenuti

The training activities and the final exam fully comply with the B1 level parameters of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, namely:
1) Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered at work, school, leisure;
2) Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling;
3) Can produce simple connected texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest;
4) Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS: the programme for non-attending students is the same as that for attending students. If possible, non-attending students are advised to attend the first lesson, and it is recommended that they remain updated by regularly referring to the e-learning (“comunità didattica”) page of the course and directly contacting the teacher for specific questions and needs.
