Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. This course provides students with the tools to support a rational decision-making process within complex optimization problems related to transportation management. The student will learn qualitative, quantitative, and IT tools to support logistics managers in reducing the related costs while improving the service level provided.

D2 - APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. This course will provide students with the ability to choose and apply the tools for decision-making through examples, exercises, and simplified case studies. The expected outcome is that the student will be able to apply such tools to solve problems in new or unfamiliar environments within broader and multidisciplinary contexts, whenever the ability to make complex decisions is needed.

D3 - MAKING JUDGMENTS. At the end of this course, the student will be able to judge autonomously which tools for decision-making are the most suitable for tackling a problem arising in the area of transportation management. The expected outcome is that the student will be able to make judgments regarding the evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of different solutions, as well as on the impact of the solution applied by the manager on the logistics system.

D4 - COMMUNICATION SKILLS. At the end of this course, the student will be able to understand, interpret, and explain the solutions produced, particularly in terms of the cost-effectiveness of different solutions, on the one hand, and the impact of the solution applied by the manager to the logistics system, on the other hand. The expected outcome is that the student will be able to communicate such pieces of information to specialist and non-specialist audiences clearly, unambiguously, and using the appropriate terminology.

D5 - LEARNING SKILLS. The student will learn an innovative teaching method, based on problem solving, where the ability to formulate optimization models will be acquired on the basis of simplified versions of real-life cases. Some of these models will be implemented in an optimization software. The corresponding solutions will be evaluated and communicated in terms of cost-effectiveness and impact on the logistics system. This method is a basis for having self-directed and autonomous learning skills.

Prerequisiti

Basic knowledge of calculus

Metodi didattici

The course is organized in theoretical lectures and tutorials provided in lab.

Verifica Apprendimento

There are no differences in terms of the examination procedure between attending and non-attending students.
The exam is written and provided as an automated test (via Moodle).
The assessment is composed of exercises to be solved through tools shown in classes.
The written exam is marked on a scale of 30, and the final mark is obtained by rounding to the nearest integer the sum of mark achieved in each single exercise of the exam.

Testi

G. Ghiani, G. Laporte, R. Musmanno, Introduction to Logistics Systems Management: With Microsoft Excel and Python Examples, Wiley, 2022, ISBN 978-1-119-78939-0.
The content of this course covers only Chapters 1 and 6.

Slides and additional material will be uploaded to the elearning community of the course.

Contenuti

This course provides an overview on the main issues related to transportation management. The course will introduce the main optimization problems encountered in this application area, along with the mathematical models and optimization techniques to support decision-makers working in the field. The course will also tackle the problems from a practical viewpoint, providing a more qualitative analysis also through the study of several case studies. A focus will be devoted to green logistics applications.
