Nature-positive source-to-sea solutions for reducing nutrient, chemical and microplastic pollution and restoring biodiversity across the Danube–Black Sea continuum
ProjectDANUBE-NATURE is designed as a catalyst for the Mission's deployment and upscaling phase, and contributes to all four expected
outcomes of the call. It will (i) provide Member States and Associated Countries with cost-effective solutions to reach the targets of
the WFD, MSFD, Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, EU Strategy for Sustainable Chemicals, EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030,
EU Climate Adaptation Strategy, Water Resilience Strategy and Zero Pollution Action Plan; (ii) give national, regional and local
authorities and other stakeholders access to cost-effective, adaptive nature-positive solutions for remediating and reducing pollution
from source to sea while restoring ecosystem capacity to provide services and adapt to climate change; (iii) deliver measurable,
quantifiable and verifiable progress towards the objectives and targets of the Mission Implementation Plan through place-based,
people-centred actions; and (iv) mobilise public and private investment for nature-positive solutions, including through new business
models, synergies with ERDF, LIFE and Cohesion Funds, and roadmaps for sustained deployment after project end. Monitoring
outputs will be interoperable with WFD and MSFD reporting cycles, the European Environment Agency's WISE and EMODnet
infrastructures, Copernicus and the EU Digital Twin Ocean, so that demonstration data feed directly into policy and into the next
generation of basin and marine strategies. The project will establish operational links with the Mission Implementation Platform and
the relevant Lighthouse CSA for the Danube and Black Sea basin, contributing to tracking progress towards Mission objectives and
coordinating with other actions in the lighthouse. The work will build on results from previous national and EU projects in the basin,
including ICPDR Joint Danube Surveys and prior NbS demonstrators, to avoid duplication and accelerate uptake.
