Curriculum Vitae

Massimiliano Giacomin received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Padova, Italy, in 1998, and the PhD degree in Information Engineering from the University of Brescia, Italy, in 2002. From 2002 to 2004, he was a post-doc grant holder at the Knowledge Engineering and Human-Computer Interaction research group, Department of Electronics for Automation of the University of Brescia, Italy. From January 2005 to November 2010, he has served as an assistant professor in the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Brescia, and from December 2010 to May 2019 as an associate professor. Since June 2019 he serves as a full professor in the same department.
His research interests are in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, including knowledge representation and automated reasoning (in particular, argumentation theory, fuzzy constraints, temporal reasoning), multi-agent systems, and knowledge-based systems. He is author of more than 130 scientific papers in international journals (including Artificial Intelligence, International Journal of Approximate Reasoning, Knowledge Engineering Review, Artificial Intelligence Communications, Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems) and international conferences and workshops (including IJCAI, ECAI, KR, AAAI, TIME, COMMA, ECSQARU). In 2017, he was awarded as the first place in the “PR Track” of the 2nd International Competition on Computational Models of Argumentation (ICCMA'17) for the solver ArgSemSAT (developed in collaboration with Federico Cerutti and Mauro Vallati). In 2006, he won the “Marco Somalvico” Artificial Intelligence prize sponsored by the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AI*IA) for significant results obtained in the field by an Italian young researcher.
He was keynote speaker at PRIMA 2017 and invited speaker at international workshops. He was invited by several international and national research groups. He is author and co-author of tutorials for various conferences, summer schools and workshops (including ICAPS 2007, CILC 2009, EASSS 2011, EASSS 2012, Frontiers ARG-NLP 2014, ESSLLI 2018) and invited lecturer for three PhD courses in Computer Science at the Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering, Universidad Nacional del Sur, Bahia Blanca (Argentina).
He is an editorial board member of “Argument & Computation” journal and co-edited 5 special issues of international journals. He is co-editor of the Proceedings of COMMA 2010 and of the first two volumes of the “Handbook of Formal Argumentation” (HOFA), College Publications, 2018 and 2021. He serves as a reviewer for various scientific journals (including Artificial Intelligence, Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, International Journal of Approximate Reasoning, International Journal of Artificial Intelligence, Annals of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, Journal of Logic and Computation, Artificial Intelligence in Medicine) and as PC member for various international conferences. He co-organized international workshops and conferences (including COMMA 2010, ARGAIP 2010, 2015 Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop “Present and future of formal argumentation”, VVH 2016, AI^3 2017, CTFA@BiCi 2019) and he was Program co-chair of the 4th Summer School on Argumentation (SSA 2020).
At the University of Brescia, he teaches a course in Computer Organization & Design and a course in Foundations of Computer Science and Programming.
