Main Research Activities

The research activity of A. Ghidoni focuses on both the development of innovative methods in the field of computational fluid dynamics and in their application to the study of flows of industrial interest, with particular emphasis on hemodynamic, turbomachinery, and aeronautical applications. The main research activities can be summarized as follows:

Unstructured grid generation. Development of a 2D73D anisotropic unstructured and hybrid grid generation code for complex industrial configurations
Recent activities have been devoted:
• to study and develop novel algorithms for the 3D unstructured mesh generation;
• to study and develop novel algorithms for the 3D hybrid mesh generation;
• to couple the mesh generation tool with the open-source software FreeCAD.

The reasearch has been developed in the framework of a project funded by Alenia S.p.A., and in collaboration with TU Delft.

High-order accurate methods for computational fluid dynamics. Development of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) discontinuous finite element solver for the computation of two and three-dimensional flow with k-ω turbulence model.
The code can exploit distributed memory parallel computers (through PETSc and MPI) and has been used to compute high-order accurate solutions of complex 3D turbulent flows. Recent activities have been devoted:
• to study and implementation of high-order time integration schemes for the simulation of unsteady turbulent flows;
• to study and implementation of novel transition models;
• to develop hybrid RANS-LES method for the simulation of detached turbulent flows;
• to develop ad-hoc boundary conditions for the hemodynamic simulation of the flow in the aorta of patients treated with a hybrid approach for thoracoabdominal aneurisms

The research has been developped in collaboration with the University of Bergamo (group of Prof. F. Bassi), with the Politecnic University of Marche (group of Prof. A. Crivellini), with the University of Calabria (group of Ing. C. De Bartolo). Part of this work has been developed in the framework of two EU projects, ADIGMA (2006-2009) and IDIHOM (2010-2013), and national grants (PRIN2009, ISCRA and LISA).

Dense gas flows in organic Rankine cycle turbines. This research is aimed at improving the basic knowledge of the flow in organic Rankine cycle (ORC) turbines, which is far less known than that of common steam and gas turbines. It is believed that, as an outcome of these studies, it will be possible to develop improved designs for this class of turbines. The flow of high molecular weight fluids typically employed in ORC turbines has been extensively investigated with the zFlow code. Up to know, the investigation focused on evaluating the influence of thermodynamic models of increasing complexity on the accuracy of the simulations, on assessing the influence of real gas effects on the aerodynamic performance of the turbine blades, as well as on investigating the possible existence of non classical flow phenomena in ORC turbines.

Part of this work has been developed in the framework of the national grant PRIN2007, of a Lombardy region project and in collaboration with TU Delft and Turboden.

Shape optmization. This research is aimed at developing a procedure to optimize the performance of components, such as turbomachinery and boilers. This procedure is based on the coupling of a genetic algorithm with a CFD code (zFlow, Ansys CFX, OpenFOAM) and an automatic mesh generator. The efficiency of the genetic algorithm has been improved with the use of metamodels (Kriging e Artificial Neural Network), which are trained on a small number of CFD evaluations and are used to predict the performance of new geometries. This approach has been used to optimize (i) a vaned diffuser of a centrifugal compressor, (ii) the nozzle of a radial turbine for an ORC cycle, (iii) the rotor of a centrifugal pump, and (iv) themixing channel of a boiler to reduce the production of NOx.

Part of this work has been developed in the framework of a Lombardy region project and in collaboration with Italo Saleri S.p.a. and ICI Caldaie.
