La formazione di un architetto neoclassico a Brescia nella prima metà del secolo XIX. Rodolfo Vantini e lo studio critico del Vitruvio di Berardo Galiani (1758)

In 1816-1817 Rodolfo Vantini developed a personal study of Vitruvius treatise edited by Berardo Galiani in 1758 in Naples. This activity is documented through the notes of the architect preserved in the major Brescia archives. The analysis of these documents provided interesting details about the role played by Galiani edition in the neo-classical architect cultural background, underlining the success of the 5th Italian edition of Vitruvian treatise. Vantini’s engineering approach, focused in particular on the drawings, detects some technical and structural inaccuracies of Galiani’s edition; some of his critical comments, probably well known among architects and engineers, will be analyzed in Carlo Amati’s edition (1829-1830). The paper discusses Vantini’s notes in comparison with Amati’s interpretation. Finally Vantini application of Vitruvian directions in his professional activity was investigated.
